Esther is concerned with everyone, engaging, disarming, full of compassion and without prejudice. Dennis lives entirely on and for himself, without contact, without attention to his surroundings. Dennis spins his own web everywhere, then sits outside the web and watches everyone who becomes entangled in the tangle of indistinct snares that he ties together to make and keep his world orderly.
When they meet, Dennis loses his ability to tie snares. He can no longer make threads, let alone a web. He feels utterly naked and knows no way around it. Esther goes about her usual business, taking him all the way, without trapping him. A smile draws on Dennis' face. This has never happened to him before.
He flees, into anonymity, where he can make another web. Esther goes about her business and looks forward to the next meeting with Dennis. Little does she know yet that this will also be the last meeting.
